Choral Resources

Beat patterns need to be as automatic and as unconscious as changing gear in a car. This is achieved by practice and repetition. As a beginner you should practise and establish clear, basic and universally recognised gestures for your beat patterns. You can develop a more personal style later. Once again, use a mirror to check your posture, making sure there is no tension.

Downbeat
The downbeat is the first beat of a bar in any meter. It is normally the strongest in a bar. For one thing, it’s usually the clearest beat for singers/players to see to help them stay in time.

Upbeat
The upbeat is the last beat of a bar. It precedes and prepares the downbeat.

The 2 pattern is the simplest pattern. This is because it consists of just these two beats: an upbeat and a downbeat.
