Section 1.3 introduced the Preparatory Beat and showed how you need to prepare your singers for an entry on the first beat of a bar with a preparatory beat one beat earlier. Then section 2.4 introduced the Anacrusis. We saw that if your singers are meant to enter on the last beat of the bar rather than on the first, you still prepare them by showing a preparatory beat one beat earlier.
We’re now going to see how to prepare an entry on the third beat of a 4/4 bar. Once again the preparation happens during the previous beat, beat 2. Using the musical examples below, practise these other types of anacruses.
