Choral Resources

Phrasing is closely connected to breathing. There are certain moments when a conductor breathes with their singers.
These include the opening of a piece and the beginnings of new phrases. The gesture for showing a breath is a brief pause – or lift – in the conducting pattern on the beat before the breath.
Note that when a conductor’s gestures for breathing are unclear, their singers will breathe randomly and the choir’s ensemble will become untidy.
