Teaching through Bartók’s Romanian Folk Dances the highly contrasting characters of the piece is revealed. One is a ’stick dance’ where the pupil needs to be taught how to feel the gravitation in the keyboard bed with flexible muscle energy. The other one should reflect the sound of Nature imitating the subtle sound and of a mountain recorder with a tight rhythmic accompaniment. The lesson gives a special attention to strictly follow the right tempos Bartók indicated in the score, with special focus on the carefully signed pedal use as well. The teacher shows how adequate breathing in and out supports the right forming and shaping of the pieces.
The involvement of the whole body and finding of the best sitting position at the piano are instrumental in reaching the best performance.
