Sectional changes of dynamics are shown by changes in the size of your beat. Just as with a preparatory beat before a cue, it’s important to show any change of dynamics in the preceding beat. Where the music needs to become suddenly louder, the preceding beat must be big and energised. If the music is to become suddenly softer, the preceding beat should be dramatically small and contained.
Sing the opening of Morley’s “Sing we and Chant it” while conducting. Conduct the opening 8 bars with large gestures showing forte and then repeat with small gestures showing piano.
Take care to show the softer dynamics with a smaller preparatory beat and to maintain the energy even though the gestures are smaller.
When the dynamics are soft and the hand gestures are smaller, it’s important to show the breath more obviously to support your singers.
