The next step is to be able to raise and lower your left hand while simultaneously beating a pattern with your right. This will be quite challenging at first, but practising drill-type exercises like the following will help.

As you become more comfortable with these gestures, you need to start imagining using them in more difficult situations, such as showing a long crescendo or diminuendo, eg. for 8 bars, or 12 bars. This is more challenging in terms of controlling both the drawn-out gradation and also the smoothness of your left hand. You can try the previous exercise in 3/4 as well as in 2/4.
