Ditta Rohmann and Márta Gulyás are internationally renowned performers and, as professors at the Liszt Academy, are among the successors preserving a tradition spanning more than 150 years. This programme is dedicated to two figures of this legacy, Zoltán Kodály and Ernst von Dohnányi. Kodály studied the cello in his youth, and his earliest attempts at composition are linked to chamber music for strings. The Sonatina and the Sonata for cello and piano, Op. 4, both written in 1909 carry the transitional and tentative nature of music composed around the turn of the century. The influence of Debussy, contemporary of Kodály, is strikingly evident. At the same time, the material evokes associations with Hungarian folksongs, which Kodály had begun researching around this time. Dohnányi’s Sonata for Cello and Piano in B-flat minor, Op. 8 embodies the aesthetics of the late Romantic period. Unlike Kodály, Dohnányi did not break with the German musical tradition. In his sonata, completed in 1899, we can hear the influence of Brahms, for example in the closing variation movement, which was the German composer’s favourite genre.
